Privacy policy
The bear keeps
your secrets.
MealBear is made by Susura LLC. This policy covers the MealBear app for iPhone and iPad and this website, mealbear.app. Last updated October 21, 2026.
The short version
- There is no MealBear account and no MealBear server.
- Your weeks, recipes, pantry, family details and settings are stored only on your device.
- We don't sell, rent or share your information, and the app has no ads, analytics or tracking.
- The app only contacts outside sites for a few features, and you can turn each one off.
- If you join the waitlist on this website, your email address is kept by our email provider, Kit.
What the app keeps on your device
Everything you enter in MealBear stays on your iPhone or iPad: your household and their ages, allergies, foods they won't eat, eating protocols, meal plans, recipes, favorites, pantry, shopping lists, reminders and settings. It is included in your device's own iCloud or computer backup if you have that turned on, which Apple handles under its own privacy policy. Deleting the app deletes this information.
Any API keys you add for optional features are kept in your device's keychain and only sent to the service they belong to.
When the app contacts other sites
A few features need to reach an outside website. Each one can be switched off in Setup → Privacy, and switching it off stops the app contacting that site.
- Recipe photos: loads photos for library recipes from the sites they came from (web.archive.org, theunitools.com, en.wikibooks.org and recipe sites you add).
- Recipe links: reads the recipe page you paste or share, and only that page.
- Barcode lookups: looks up a scanned barcode on Open Food Facts (world.openfoodfacts.org).
- Ingredient lookups: shows a photo and short description from Wikipedia (en.wikipedia.org) when you tap an ingredient.
- Online recipes (only with your own key): sends your diet choices and search words to Spoonacular (api.spoonacular.com).
- Describe a recipe (only with your own key): sends what you type and your diet, prep-style and budget choices to Anthropic (api.anthropic.com) so Claude can write the recipe. Recipes from photos are read on your device and never sent anywhere.
Those sites receive the request and your device's internet address, as any website would, under their own privacy policies. MealBear doesn't send them your name, household or meal plans.
Calendar, reminders and sharing
If you add cook days to your calendar, turn on reminders or share a week or list, MealBear uses your device's own calendar, notifications and share sheet, and only when you ask it to. Nothing goes to us.
Purchases
Purchases such as the Theme Pack are handled by Apple through the App Store. We don't receive your payment details.
This website and the waitlist
This website has no ads, analytics or tracking cookies. It remembers your Animations on/off choice in your own browser. Our host, Cloudflare, processes basic request information (such as your internet address) to deliver and protect the site.
If you join the waitlist, your email address is stored by Kit (kit.com), the service we use to send emails. We use it only to tell you about MealBear's launch and the odd sneak peek. You'll be asked to confirm first, every email has an unsubscribe link, and you can ask us to delete your address at any time.
Children
MealBear is meant to be used by adults planning meals, including for their kids. Kids' details you enter stay on your device. The waitlist is for adults; we don't knowingly collect email addresses from children under 13.
Your choices
You can see, change or delete everything in the app, and turn off any outside feature in Setup → Privacy. To unsubscribe from emails, use the link in any email. For anything else, including deleting your waitlist email, write to us.
Changes
If this policy changes, we'll update it here and change the date at the top.
